Local Authorities are quoting 600 year old Royal Charters which 'give them authority to ban markets within a day's donkey ride of another.' None actually seem able to produce copies of these charters in today's English. They claim this distance is equivalent to about 6.25 miles and are measuring as the crow flies. In one case Tyneside Council has to decide whether to allow a market to be set up within a donkey's ride of the market in South Shields. The distance as the donkey rides is nearer 14 miles.
Anecdotal evidence is more markets are better for the areas.
