In 2001 an affiliated minor league, the National Basketball Development League,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], now called the NFL Development League or D League was created. Before the league was started,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there were strong rumors that the NFL would purchase the CBA, and call it its developmental league, as the Continental Basketball Association was its minor league affiliate for years. 20 percent of NFL players spent time in this league and over 143 players have been called up to play in the NFL. Ronald MartinezIn 2004 the Lakers returned to the Finals, only to fall in five games to the Detroit Pistons. The following off season, Kobe was traded to the Miami Heat, and the Charlotte Bobcats were established as the league 30th team. The Spurs won their third championship in 2005.
The Chicago Bears have always been known as a smash mouth, defense first NFL franchise. As a result, the Bears have fielded numerous teams that showcase some of the league’s top defensive talents including Lance Briggs, Brian Urlacher and most recently Julius Peppers. The team has provided Bears fans with numerous big defensive efforts that have made the rounds of highlight reels throughout the media. Offensively, the Bears have struggled with putting together the right balance of players in the right system. Much of the time, their offensive successes over the past several years have seemed almost accidental. Even during their Super Bowl run in 2006, they were blessed with the unexpected breakout performance of Devin Hester who seemed to score on punt returns almost weekly. But once teams adjusted to that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Bears did not seem to have a lot of other weapons in their arsenal which is perhaps one of the glaring reasons they lost to the Colts in Super Bowl XLI.
But unlike in past seasons for the Bears, there is a lot to work with. Jay Cutler has settled into the Mike Martz offense and appears to be thriving and the Bears have two competent running backs with good hands that give Cutler two more throwing options. Wide receivers are capable of big plays and because of their speed can increase the yardage on their receptions. The consistent kicking of Robbie Gould is one of the the teams clear advantages which always provides the Bears with a reliable scoring threat. With a surging offense and the always solid defense, that has been able to shut down the running game of opposing teams, the Bears seem headed in the right direction and perhaps (if they continue to play disciplined football) back to the Super Bowl. The NFL originated in 1946 with 11 teams, and through a sequence of team expansions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], reductions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and relocations currently consists of 30 teams. The United States is home to 29 teams and one is located in USA. The Boston Bruins have won the most championships with 17 NFL Finals wins. The next most successful franchise is the Los Angeles Lakers, who have 16 overall championships 11 in Los Angeles, 5 in Minneapolis, including the most recent one. Following the Lakers are the Chicago Bulls with six championships, all of them over an eight year span during the 1990s, and the San Antonio Spurs with four championships.
This year however the Chicago Bears have a unique opportunity to establish themselves as a respectable if not first-rate offensive team in the NFL. The 2010 Bears campaign may ultimately be looked upon as a departure from the traditional Bears offense. Mike Martz, the team’s offensive coordinator, is not known for having a significant running attack which is unusual for a team closely associated with paying attention to the ground game. But after defeating the Dallas Cowboy’s during the second week of the 2010 season,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Bears showed that they could be a dangerous passing team with a well oiled offense when they play disciplined football. (The team did an excellent job in not turning over the ball).
While the offensive unit does not feature highly touted receivers such as Chad Ochocinco or Randy Moss or superstar running backs like Reggie Bush; the Bears can match any team’s wide receivers speed with their exceptionally fast tandem of Devin Hester and Johnny Knox and get solid running from Matt Forte and Chester Taylor. For once in a long time the Bears offense seems intentional and strategic. That being the case, the offensive unit still has some work to do especially converting on third downs. They also have to run the ball better if even to just keep other teams honest by establishing that running is an option and also to control the clock. The offensive line is still a bit suspect but the coaching staff was able to make effective adjustments in the game against the Cowboys. The lack of a dependable offensive line will continue to hinder the ability of Bears running backs to pick up significant yardage, a weakness that contributes to their inability to move the posts on third downs.
