Pulling Pork, Botching Burgers and Feeding Fallon on 'Top Chef All-Stars' - Slashfood
Photo: David Giesbrecht / BravoLet the head games begin -- in earnest -- on "Top Chef All-Stars." Now that we're down to eight chefs and immunity is out the window, things are starting to get interesting. It helps that our friends at Bravo are ratcheting up the utter-randomness factor -- for both fans at home and the cheftestants themselves.First, they have them judge each other's Quickfire challenge -- a fondue contest, no less. This means lots of sidelong glances and "who do I hate the most" scheming, not to mention references to how hopelessly retro fondue is, how the '70s were such a swinging time, and how Mike has "never been to these gay fondue parties." Hmm -- by "gay," you meant "happy and delightful," right, Mike?No sooner did the chefs choose the best among them -- Dale, who dipped little beef-and-bread skewers into a fondue-pot full of simmering pho -- than they were whisked, mysteriously, to Bravo's big brother,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], NBC studios. We find it somewhat hard to believe that they were dumped unknowingly onto the set of the "Jimmy Fallon Show," but hey -- Carla seemed genuinely discombobulated -- way more than usual. And that's saying a lot.Spoiler alert: Winner and loser are revealed after the jump.Fallon assigned them all dishes by employing cell-phone-cam roulette -- more dizzying randomness. But more interesting than the path to the Big Meal were the weird tangents the show took, among them:- Dale, pointing out,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with the straightest face possible, how it's hard to live with Angelo because he's "such a pretty man." Cue the montage of Angelo, trying on purple outfits for the day, manscaping his perfectly groomed five-o'-clock shadow.- Fallon's obvious awe at all the chefs, in particular Richard, who tried to play against type by not being that guy with "a helmet, 40 pounds of dry ice and a flame thrower!" Fallon was crestfallen when he saw Richard's semi-traditional ramen: He was expecting "smoke machine and laser beams." Ah, cruel irony.- The off-the-charts Buitoni product placement, which involved these eight professional chefs ripping open bags of packaged ravioli and cooking them for dinner -- and acting as if they really really liked them, when their faces had the most forced smiles possible.- The incessant gay jokes -- c'mon, Bravo! Maybe it was funny if you happened to be there, but all the comments on "Mike's sausage" (in a cast-iron pan with razor-thin peppers!) and "Angelo's pulled pork" (dill-and-coffee spiced!) got to be a little much, even from a crowd of seasoned comedians. While Angelo's spices impressed, it was Carla -- ecstatic at the prospect of being able to make a chicken potpie for Fallon -- who "delivered," in Tom's words. Her artful, pea-dusted pie (crust on top and bottom, thank you very much) looked like the dish she'd been dying to make all season. If Carla got to make exactly what she wanted, it was poor, sweet, over-the-top Fabio who got dealt a bad card. While most of us would welcome the challenge to make a burger, the Italian Stallion had never in his life so much as shaped a patty, and his dish showed it. Instead of a big, juicy cheeseburger, he served up a meat-loaf slice on a bun,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with a gross cheese sauce on the side. Ruining this staple of Americana was too much for Fallon and the judges, proving one instance where Fabio's naive charm couldn't save his hide.
The exclusionThe head teacher wrote to the parents of R and F telling them that neither R nor F could come back to school, but that they would be given help in completing their course at home. He should, of course, have told the parents immediately, ideally by telephone followed by a letter, of their right to make representations to the governing body.
