Ode to a Crock Pot
Ode to a Crock Pot by Terri Kirby Erickson I am crazy about my new Crock Pot. In fact, I'm so crazy about it that I could be suffering from Objectophillia-although I haven't asked it to marry me yet. (I'm not sure if that would be bigamy considering the fact that my husband and I have been together for twenty years),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but anyway, I digress. I know I'm late to this whole Crock Pot cooking thing. People have been using them for years. Not me, however. I don't know why. Now I can't believe (after having one since Christmas) that I waited so long! Right this very minute, the scent of Lemon Chicken is permeating my entire house and let me tell you, it smells divine. And in exactly four hours, dinner will be ready. The meat will be moist, the spices perfectly blended, and the whole enterprise required nothing more from me than dumping in the ingredients, flipping the switch and going about my day. And washing the "pot," (or is it the crock?), is a snap, too, now that you can lift out the glass "innards." (My husband usually cleans the kitchen, anyway, but I'm happy to see that Crock Pot washing is so trouble-free, for his sake...). Lemon Chicken is actually the third dish I've made in the past two weeks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], from a Crock Pot recipe. The first one I tried was Beef Stew. I put the whole thing together, switched on the pot and went shopping. When I got home late that afternoon, I could smell the beef simmering when I pulled into the garage! Needless to say, my husband loved it. In fact, he seemed to be in a trance-like state as he walked up the basement stairs and across the kitchen to the Crock Pot, when he came home from work. He immediately leaned over and took a good, up-close whiff of the bubbling ingredients,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an expression of such ecstasy on his face you'd think he was inhaling Cleopatra's perfume. If we hadn't already been married, that might have been the moment he asked me. The next dish I made was Chicken Cacciatore. For six hours, our house smelled like an Italian Restaurant. You could almost see olive trees from the kitchen window-hear the strains of "Tango Italiano" wafting through the tomato-scented air. So, I'd have to say that the Crock Pot my Mom and Dad gave me for Christmas was right up there, in the gift-giving department, with a pair of diamond earrings. It may not be as flashy or look as well with a little black dress, and but as far as romance goes, my husband has fallen in love with me all over again since I started using it. Fortunately, there's a place in my heart for him, too, although he'll have to make room in there, for my Crock Pot!
The Court of Appeal pointed out that R and F's submission in the county court was of overt, conscious racism, and it was not prepared to find that there had been unconscious discrimination. The decisionThe Court of Appeal said that, unlike the ordinary civil claim where the judge decides, on the claimant's evidence only, whether the claimant has made out a case, in this case the judge had had the benefit of the whole of the evidence. Despite the school's failure to comply with the statutory requirements, the judge had been entitled to find on the basis of all the evidence that R and F had not proved racial discrimination.
