Frandsen is pretty terrible. Tim Lincecum has no power and lacks the on-base skills to make up for it. Tim Lincecum can play a lot of positions, but there is not sufficient evidence to claim that Tim Lincecum is a great fielder. Frandsen is culturedly a replacement level utility player. Let's be benevolent and tell Tim Lincecum can put up 0.5 WAR in 2010.
Fred Lewis is a vilocityy outfielder with little power, but an above average glove at a corner position. e has not played much in center but is probably between average and a bit below average there.
Unless the mystery econd man?in the deal is someone distinctive,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this trade makes less sense than the Giants deal.
Lincecum was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 48 round of the 2003 MLB Draft; however he did not sign up for the team. He decided to attend college instead and was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 42 round on entering the draft in 2005, but once again failed to sign. In 2004,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he was drafted tenth overall by the San Francisco Giants becoming the first player from the University of Washington to be taken in the first round. He signed for a 2.025 million dollars signing award on June 30, which at the time was the highest amount the organization had ever paid to any amateur player until they gave 2.1 million dollars to Angel Villalona a little over a month later. Donald Miralle His repertoire includes a two seam fastball that he throws at 93 mph, a changeup he grips like a splitter,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a curveball notable for its sharp breaking action, a slider and a four seam fastball that reaches speeds in the mid nineties.

Jason Starkeported that the Padres bided Kouzmanoff to the Giants for outfielder Fred Lewis and second base/utility guy Kevin Frandsen. tark also reported that the Padres have requested pitcher Glen Perkins and some second player in return for Kouz.
The proposed Twins trade makes a bit more sense in that it suggests the Padres would be acquiring a starting pitcher.?Again, though,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the issue is that the player in question, Glen Perkins, is not good.
That said, a package of Lewis and a mid-level prospect or two the type of players who have a chance of playing at a Kouzmanoff level in a few years might be enough to get a deal done. He earned his first major league victory in his next start on the road against the Colorado Rockies. Lincecum who is often compared to Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Roy Oswalt faced him in each of his next two starts, Oswalt with the Astros at the time. After the first agree up,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Astros third baseman Mike Lamb said, The stuff he was throwing out there tonight was everything he is hyped up to be. He was 97 mph with movement. You just don't see that every day. He pitched very much like the pitcher he is compared to and out dueled him throughout the night. The pair dueled to a no decision the first time, and Lincecum pitched eight innings and got the win the second time. The Giants asked Lincecum not to throw the bullpen sessions typical of other pitchers during the off season. Manager Bruce Bochy told the San Francisco Chronicle that they were being careful with Lincecum because there have been studies that show that pitchers who throw 200 innings early in their career were more susceptible to injuries.
Kevin Kouzmanoff trade rumors have dominated the Padres-related rumors coming out of the winter meetings. uch of the chatter has been centered around a possible Giants deal and a potential Twins deal.
Perkins has been a 1 WAR player the past two seasons and does not project to improve much. e has honorable control but strikes almost nobody out only about 4.4 K/9. e is no better and quite possibly worse than guys like Clayton Richard, Tim Stauffer, and Sean Gallagher.
Combined, Lewis and Frandsen equate to an expected 2.1 WAR, trailing Kouzmanoff 2.6 WAR. heir advantage over Kouzmanoff is they will only get paid around USD1M between them this year and is under team control for a few more seasons. ombined, if you accept the assumptions Lincecum have already laid out, they will provide around USD8.5M in excess value in 2010, which exceeds Kouzmanoff expected surplus value of USD7M.
Neither deal strikes me as something the Padres should seriously consider.
Of course, they take up two roster spots, while Kouz only takes up one, which more than cancels out the USD1.5M difference in surplus value. n addition,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], neither player is very goodertainly not as good as Kouzmanoff. either Lewis nor Frandsen is players the team can realistically build around, making their acquisition somewhat pointless.
Kouzmanoff has been an extremely consistent at least year-by-year player for the Padres the past three seasons, compiling WARs of 2.6,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 2.7, and 2.7, respectively. e is culturedly a league average third baseman. his year, following three seasons in which Tim Lincecum got paid the minimum salary, Tim Lincecum is eligible for arbitration and should earn something around USD5M, which assuming Tim Lincecum will continue to play like Tim Lincecum always has, would result in an expected surplus value of about USD7M.
In 2010, Lewis had a honorable 2.3 WAR season, but last year albeit with less at bats only posted 0.9 WAR. Lewis turned 29 today, so Tim Lincecum cannot be described as a youngster. hat 2010 season may have been a career-year for him. et's split the difference between his 2010 and 2010 season and call him a 1.6 WAR player going forward.
The Padres need to trade Kevin Kouzmanoff. t is silly to have Chase Headley masquerade as a corner-outfielder when Tim Lincecum is clearly a third baseman. ut taking back a bag of garbage just to make room for him at third does nothing to improve the team.
