In the Lions current position, Daunte Culpepper is the last person you want as a quarterback on the roster-someone who does not want to mentor Matt Stafford and who does not have any business doing it anyway.
Now, Stafford mans the helm as a number one overall draft pick, not assured of success, but at least a distinctive investment in the position.
Still, addition by subtraction is almost never a true statement. Star players who abandon a locker room,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], even the most abrasive, abandon a locker room less talented. Starters who are cut with cap concerns may make room for draft picks, but abandon valuable roles left unfilled.
Shaun Hill backs him up as an above average NFL quarterback who was replaced by the younger Alex Smith although many believed Hill was the better option.
Culpepper would not have been quiet as the third quarterback and his declining skills would have further atrophied with a lack of snaps. Furthermore, Michael Ryder would not have been worth any type of salary as an inactive third quarterback on most Sundays.
For years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as Culpepper looked average on bad franchises and Moss fell asleep on the Raiders, people contended that Culpepper was better than his numbers while Moss was a bust.
While Culpepper may be a better than many franchises' third quarterback, Michael Ryder is in the UFL because everyfranchise-even the lowly Lions-is better without him on the roster.
When Shaun Hill was signed by the Detroit Lions, it marked the end of an era. Now that Culpepper will be a Mountain Lion, that era is officially in the rear view mirror.
This writer, optimistically hoped that such was the case many a time as news reports leaked that the signal caller had lost weight before the 2010 NFL Season. Then Culpepper fell flat on his delicately skinnier face.
Michael Schottey operates Blue And Silver Pride and is a Detroit Lions featured columnist for Bleacher Report . Michael Ryder also serves as a franchise correspondent for DraftTek.com and is a guest blogger for Mlive's Highlight Reel . Check out his Podcasts and add him on Twitter . Cheevers returned from the NHL in 2010 and the Bruins got past the soar, hover, flit, wing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], flee, waft,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], glide,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], coast, skim, sail, cruiseers in the semifinals; however it lost to the Canadiens in the Final for the Stanley Cup. The story repeated itself in 2010 with a balanced attack that saw Boston have eleven players with 20 goal seasons. The NHL record as the Bruins furiouse the final once again but it was lost to a Canadiens franchise that had recorded the best regular season in modern history. Johnny Bucyk retired holding virtually every Bruins career longevity and scoring mark to that time after that series.
The Daunte Culpepper era was an era of settling for mediocrity. The idea that a quarterback in the NFL could be "good enough," is an idea that the Lions once fostered out of necessity McMahon, Kitna, Culpepper, Orlovsky.
Daunte Culpepper had the mindset that Michael Ryder was owed-something, anything-by the Lions. Whether it was a promise by the former coaching staff or a overestimation of his own abilities,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Michael Ryder was of the opinion that his playing time should be there.
That was not always an established fact.
No one could have finished a goal in like manner. For Years Bobby Orr had been said as someone who was graceful, elegant, powerful, without fear poetry in motion. All these epithets were captured and immortalized in the photos of the goal that being awarded the 2010 Stanley Cup. Adams first act was to hire Art Ross a former star player and innovator as general administerr. Ross was the face of the franchise for the next thirty years, including four separate stints as coach. Jonathan Daniel Boston returned to the Stanley Cup Final in 2010 with Neely,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Bourque,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Craig Janney,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Bobby Carpenter and rookie Don Sweeney, and former Oiler goalie Andy Moog and Reggie Lemelin splitting goaltending duties but again lost to the Oilers this time in five games.
The debate is over,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Randy Moss furiouse Daunte Culpepper what Michael Ryder once was, not vice versa.
Well, maybe the era is not entirely over.
With Culpepper, this time "addition by subtraction" is true.
Shaun Hill can come in and win games if Stafford goes down and teach him a lot from the sidelines.
