It should have been another milestone for the man who could eventually shoot past Mays,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ruth, Aaron, and Bonds on his way to becoming the all-time home run king. However, while watching it live...there was never that feeling of this being something special.
Did the “steroid era” in Major League Baseball ruin everything? I never bought into the whole notion that steroids were the worst thing in the world. Should players have been tested long ago? Absolutely.
In New York, the moment will be celebrated just because that’s where A-Rod happens to play. However, throughout the country there was no feeling of greatness or feeling that we are witnessing something special. For a sport that is so rich with tradition, history, and numbers like baseball is, this should have been a big deal. So what happened?
Now, I don’t know Alex Rodriguez. For all I know, he could be the nicest man in the world. However, when you watch him play or when you listen to him talk there is nothing that seems genuine about the man. He has a smug attitude and he seems to think that the world owes him something because he is Alex Rodriguez.
Does this take away from the fact that he is a great baseball player? No. In fact some of the greatest players in the history of the game have had bad attitudes or skeletons in their closet. But maybe the problem just stems from the fact that A-Rod is not a likable person.
Does the joy of seeing an athlete join such a rare group immediately evaporate as soon as the steroid label is attached to them? Perhaps. If you conducted a countrywide poll,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], people would likely say that they don’t care because A-Rod is a cheater. However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], perhaps there is more to this than just steroids. It could have to do with personal feelings for A-Rod.
But does it? Yes. Newton Heath initially played on a field on North Road,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], close to the railway yard. the original capacity was about 12,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000, but club officials deemed the facilities inadequate for a club hoping to join The Football League. Some expansion took place in 1887, and in 1891 Newton Heath used its minimal financial reserves to purchase two grandstands, each able to hold 1,000 spectators. Although attendances were not recorded for many of the earliest matches at North Road, the highest documented attendance was approximately 15,000 for a First Division match against Sunderland on 4 March 1893. A similar attendance was also recorded for a friendly match against Gorton Villa on fifth September 1889.
Manchester United was formed in 1878 by the Carriage and Wagon department of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot at Newton Heath as Newton Heath LYR Football Club. The team initially played games against other departments and rail companies, but by 1888 the club had become a founding member of The Combination, a regional football league. However, following the league dissolution after just one season, Newton Heath joined the newly formed Football Alliance, which ran for three seasons before being merged with the Football League. This resulted in the club starting the 1892 to 93 season in the First Division, by which time it had become independent of the rail company and dropped the LYR from its name. After just two seasons, the club was relegated to the Second Division. Jim McIsaac Manchester United Football Club is an English professional football club, based in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, that plays in the Premier League. Founded as Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878, the club changed its name to Manchester United in 1902 and moved to Old Trafford in 1910.
Watching Alex Rodriguez hit his 600th home run should have been a big deal.
Should that have an effect on the monumental achievement that is 600 home runs? No.
However, we never really know how much steroids or any performance enhancing drug truly helps an athlete. Given the rash of athletes who have admitted steroid use or have been linked to steroids in the last few years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the steroid issue has really taken the joy out of the game. Now, whenever we see a player hit a home run we often wonder if they were juicing.
