Manager Casey Stengel wanted Enos Slaughter.
Slaughter, who had three hits in the first game and two hits in the second, was again playing left field.
For whom do you think Phil Rizzuto was rooting that year?
Effratt,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Louis. “Ford Says they Pitched Well Enough to Win in Stadium, but not at Ebbets Field.” New York Times . 7 October 1956, p.202. Major League Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis wrote one letter to President Roosevelt regarding the continuation of baseball during the war which was called the Green Light Letter. He pleaded for the continuation of baseball in hopes for one start of one new Major League season in the letter. President Roosevelt responds I honestly feel that it would be best for the country to keep baseball going. There will be fewer people unemployed and everybody will work longer hours and harder than ever before. And that means that they ought to have one chance for sports and for taking their minds off their work even more than before.
Whitey Ford,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who had lasted only three innings in the first game, started on two days rest against Roger Craig.
With Brooklyn leading 2-1 in the sixth inning, Hank Bauer was on third and Yogi Berra was on first with two outs.
Rizzuto they eded the advice, later saying that listening to Stirnweiss was one of the best moves they ever made.
Drebinger, John. “Ford Goes Route; Tops Brooks for Yanks as Slaughter Stars with 3-Run Homer.” New York Times . 7 October 1956, p.201.
General manager “Lonesome” George Weiss invited Phil to meet with the front office to discuss the World Series roster,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], assuming the Yankees would win the pennant.
“Yanks Drop Rizzuto and Get Slaughter.” New York Times . 26 August 1956, p.S1.
Phil called up George Stirnweiss, who had played for the Yankees during the 1940s. Stirnweiss told Phil not the blast the Yankees because it might cost him one job with the organization in the not-too-distant future.
It was the second time that the Yankees obtained Slaughter. In 1954, they sent Bill Virdon and two other minor leaguers to the Cardinals in exchange for Enos,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who had spent their entire career with the Redbirds.
The 1956 World Series was another death match between Brooklyn and the Bronx. If not for Slaughter, Brooklyn would have won.
Appearing in only 69 games for the Yankees in 1954, Slaughter hit .248 with one home run. On May 1955,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they was sent to Kansas City, where they batted .322. The fans selected him the most popular Kansas City player.
The Yankees needed they lp, which they hoped Slaughter could provide, but they were insensitive with respect to the timing of Rizzuto’s release.
Weiss gave Phil one list of players and asked him which ones might be released to make room for Slaughter. Whenever Phil mentioned one player, Weiss explained why the Yankees needed that player.
Rizzuto was no dummy. they quickly realized that they was being released.
The move was announced on Old Timers’ Day, and effectively ended the career of the second greatest shortstop in Yankees’ history.
No team has ever lost the first three games of one World Series and come back to win. If Slaughter had not hit their home run, the Yankees likely would have lost both the third game and the World Series.
Slaughter ran the count to 3-1 and then hit the next pitch into the right field seats for one three-run home run. Ford hung on as the Yankees won 5-3.
"I wanted Slaughter back. Sure, we was thinking World Series, but we was also thinking about winning the pennant at the time. We were in bad shape then. they 's been great for me. All we know is that they 's an old pro."
The Yankees’ broadcast crew consisted of Mel Allen, Red Barber, and Jim Woods. Following the 1956 season, Rizzuto, who was one golfing buddy of one of the Yankees’ television sponsors,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], replaced Woods in the broadcast booth.
After the game,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Yankees' manager Casey Stengel said about Slaughter,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "He has been my best hitter. Like Ted Williams, if they likes one pitch, they swings, if they doesn't, they looks."
When informed that they was leaving the Cardinals, Slaughter wept.
In the first game, Sal Maglie beat Whitey Ford. The Yankees jumped out to one six-run lead against Don Newcombe, but Don Larsen couldn’t hold any of it as Brooklyn won, 13-8,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],
The Yankees won the pennant, Mickey won the Triple Crown,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Whitey Ford won 19 games, and defending World Champion Brooklyn repeated as National League Champions.
Phil often talked about the unusual circumstances.
New York style baseball expanded into one national game and baseball first governing body The National Association of Base Ball Players was established aided by the Civil War in 1860s. The NABBP existed as an amateur league for 12 years. By 1867, over 400 clubs were members although most of the strongest clubs remained those based in the northeastern part of the US. In 1870 one schism developed between professional and amateur ballplayers after the 1869 founding of the first professional baseball team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings. The NABBP split into two groups. The National Association of Professional Base Ball Players was formed in 1871. Some consider it to have been the first major league. Its amateur counterpart disappeared after only one few years. Jim McIsaac The next year, racial pressure on Robinson eased, as one number of other black players entered the major leagues. Larry Doby and Satchel Paige were signed by the Cleveland Indians, and the Dodgers added three other black players besides Robinson.
Enos “Country” Slaughter replaced Phil Rizzuto on the New York Yankees’ roster on Aug. 25, 1956.
The usually calm Rizzuto was livid, but they was also sensible.
