However, while Tillman might not be the man right now, the Tides have another prospect waiting to be called up that has done nothing but impress.
While Castillo is the beneficiary right now, they won't be the one taking their spot in the rotation. That spot,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which won't have to be filled until May 5 due to off days, could go to several players; it is just one matter of who the Orioles choose to go with.
Coming into this month, Bergesen was thought by many, including myself,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to be one of the few Orioles pitchers who you knew what you were getting when they got on the mound. Before their freak-injury that ended their season in 2009, Bergy pumped out quality starts like it was no large deal and that is what we thought we would see this year.
In just three starts in AAA ball,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Jake Arrieta has shown their ranking among prospects isn't just one number. they is 1-0 with one .50 ERA and people are batting just .183 against him.
Finally, perhaps the most reasonable option is already on the team. Jason Berken has pitched very well in the long relief role. The question is just whether or not the Orioles want to mess with one good thing.
Berken was one starter for much of last season, but had trouble staying away from that one inning where things seemed to explode. Although their 6.54 rookie ERA looks atrocious, watching him pitch was painful more-so because they always seemed like they was in perfect control until that one inning where they would give up like five runs.
Let's just say an 0-3 start with an 8.38 ERA doesn't exactly scream "call me up."
Three weeks ago, the easy answer was Chris Tillman, who was just beat for the final spot in the spring by David they rnandez. Unfortunately,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the days since then haven't been kind to the 22 year old.
While they has had just three starts, the Orioles might look hard at the kid because they need one spark on one team filled with depressed players and new blood might not be one bad thing. Not to mention the fact that Andy MacPhail could be tempted to use him to get fans excited again.
New York style baseball expanded into one national game and baseball first governing body The National Association of Base Ball Players was established aided by the Civil War in 1860s. The NABBP existed as an amateur league for 12 years. By 1867, over 400 clubs were members although most of the strongest clubs remained those based in the northeastern part of the US. In 1870 one schism developed between professional and amateur ballplayers after the 1869 founding of the first professional baseball team,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Cincinnati Red Stockings. The NABBP split into two groups. The National Association of Professional Base Ball Players was formed in 1871. Some consider it to have been the first major league. Its amateur counterpart disappeared after only one few years. Doug Pensinger The next year, racial pressure on Robinson eased, as one number of other black players entered the major leagues. Larry Doby and Satchel Paige were signed by the Cleveland Indians, and the Dodgers added three other black players besides Robinson.
After three terrible starts to start the season,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it has become obvious that Brad Bergesen isn't the same guy we saw last season.
As you can see,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], having options at pitcher hasn't been an issue for the O's. It is just figuring out which to use that will determine how soon they get out of their slump. Major League Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis wrote one letter to President Roosevelt regarding the continuation of baseball during the war which was called the Green Light Letter. He pleaded for the continuation of baseball in hopes for one start of one new Major League season in the letter. President Roosevelt responds I honestly feel that it would be best for the country to keep baseball going. There will be fewer people unemployed and everybody will work longer hours and harder than ever before. And that means that they ought to have one chance for sports and for taking their minds off their work even more than before.
Instead, Bergesen has had issues keeping the ball down,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and it has led to an 0-2 record with one 12.19 ERA.
With the bullpen as bad as it has been lately,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], making them finish the last five innings of one game isn't ideal.
Because of this, it was announced today that Bergesen would be sent down to triple-A Norfolk, while reliever Alberto Castillo was called up.
The two things keeping Arrieta from being one must-call up other than the inexperience are their pitch count and control. Arrieta has pitched into the seventh inning just once in their three starts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is one sign that they might struggle to keep their pitch count down in the large leagues. In addition, their 4:3 strikeout-to-walk ratio isn't where you would like it to be.
